מזכיר המדינה האמריקני, אנתוני בלינקן, אמר ביום שישי כי ממשל ביידן התיר באחרונה לצבא אוקראינה לעשות שימוש בנשק אמריקני כדי להתמודד עם "איומים בתוך גבולות רוסיה", אך לא מסר פרטים מלאים על התנאים לשינוי הזה בעמדה האמריקנית.

עד לאחרונה, הקפידו המדינות החברות בנאט"ו על האיסור שהוטל על כוחות צבא אוקראינה שלא להשתמש בנשק שקיבל מהמערב כדי לפגוע במטרות מעבר לגבול המזרחי שלה, קרי בשטח רוסיה. מדיניות זו החלה להשתנות על רקע מתקפה רוסית מחודשת באזור חרקוב הסמוך לגבול אוקראינה.

נשיא אוקראינה, וולודימיר זלנסקי, הגביר באחרונה את בקשותיו מבני בריתו בנאט"ו להקל את כללי הלחימה כדי לאפשר לכוחותיו לתקוף בתוך רוסיה. ואכן בימים האחרונים, מספר מנהיגים בתוך הברית המערבית החלו להקל על המגבלות.
